5 simple ways to workout at home

Do you think that prolonged morning-to-bed time sitting is unavoidable? From sitting while commuting to spending a substantial amount of time in front of a computer at work and then probably going home and watching TV, quite a lot of time is spent off your feet.  Such a sedentary life style causes a number of health problems, but on the bright side there are so many simple ways in which you can be a little more active.  Take a look at these 5 ways to spend more time on your feet, while you are at home:

1.      Take the stairs

You have probably read this umpteen number of times, but do you actually take the stairs when you have the chance? If you live in an apartment you have no excuses. Whether it is just two flights of stairs or six flights, take them. On an average climbing the stairs for two minutes, five days a week burns as much calories as a 30 minute walk. If you don’t have time to go for a walk every day, taking the stairs is the best solution.

2.      Groove a little

Dancing is one of the best ways to stay fit, and it’s also effortless and fun. Put on some music while washing up after meals, and move to the music. Dancing helps burn calories, music can have a refreshing effect and your joints will get the exercise needed.

 3.      Make TV time into workout time

Just fidgeting while you’re watching TV is a calorie burner in itself. Studies have shown that people who fidget even while sitting can burn upto 350 calories. Use TV commercials as a chance to stretch and walk around for the duration of the commercial. If you want to do something more, move you treadmill in front of the TV and work out while your favourite shows are on. This way you won’t be bored and you will be exercising.

4.      Tidy up daily

Make tidying up the house an everyday everything. Don’t wait till the weekend to clear up the clutter and neaten the house. Pick up things from the floor by squatting, this way your thighs and calves get an extra workout. Moving around to do the laundry, wiping windows and other such things will keep you occupied and give your back and other muscles a little exercise.

5.      Do some gardening

By default gardening is a workout. Whether it is bending down to pull out weeds, or walking around raking leaves off the lawn. When you are taking out weeds get down on your hands and knees to yank them out. This can be part of your daily workout once or twice a week. Leaning onto your hands as you weed will build arm, shoulder, and upper back strength.

The above mentioned exercises will not take up much of your time and they are not very strenuous either. The greats of Women’s Tennis.

Maria Sharapova’s stunning performances against Misaki Doi and Olga Puchkova earned her a double bagel at the Australian Open. This made her the first woman in 27 years to win successive matches at a Grand Slam tournament by the identical 6-0 6-0 score. Apart from this she also has other noteworthy accomplishments to her credit, like being one of the youngest players to win Wimbledon and many more. In light of these achievements, we bring you some of the most legendary players in Women’s tennis and their outstanding and unmatched records.

Steffi Graff

Undoubtedly one of the most well known tennis players, Steffi Graff has an amazing 22 Grand Slam titles to her credit. She is only player to have won a Golden Slam, which means that she clinched all four majors and the Olympic Gold in 1988. She is arguably one the best players that Women’s tennis has ever seen. Keeping in mind these numbers it is not surprising that Graf broke a number of records as well, and what’s even more amazing is that some of these records have still not been broken. She enjoyed a World No.1 ranking for 377 weeks, a record that no other player has beaten till date. Martina Navratilova herself said that Steffi Graff was the best all round player. If nothing else, that one statement makes her eligible to be on this list.

Martina Navratilova

While Steffi Graff dominated the Single’s games, Navratilova was a force to be reckoned with in Singles, Doubles and Mixed Doubles arena. Martina was a player par excellence. She won an incredible, record-holding 31 Women’s Doubles titles and ten Grand Slam Mixed Doubles titles. Like Graff , Martina too has set some records that have not been broken yet. Some of these are her 74 consecutive match win and  the record for the highest number of WTA Tour Championship titles. Since the Open era began in 1968 (and statistics were carefully recorded), no player — male or female — has won more tournaments than Navratilova’s 167. Navratilova’s ability to adapt and excel as an all-round event player give her a spot on this list.

Chris Evert

Chris Evert was known for her powerful double hand backhand and most dared not challenge this shot close to the net, except Martina Navratilova in 1980. Like most players have a surface preference, Evert too had one- clay. She was rightly called the Queen of clay and has a record on 125 matches on the surface with a loss of only 7 sets. This record remains unbeaten. Her career winning percentage in singles matches of 90% is something that no other player –man or woman has achieved since then. At the US Open she holds a record for the most number of single match wins – a whopping 101 which is yet to be broken.
