Indian Women’s Hockey Team – A Chak De in making
Name: Indian Women’s Hockey Team
Current World Ranking: 13
Rio Medal Chances: Low
Current Form (Scale of 1 to 5, 5 being the highest): 3
Indian Women’s Hockey team qualified for the Olympics at Rio after a gap of 36 years. For a nation which calls Hockey its national sport and where the male counterparts have dominated history, its ironical to see Women’s team qualifying after such a huge gap.
But, it’s a great news for India. With the qualification, the girls in blue also conveyed a strong social message to the country.
Ritu Rani, Monika, Sunita Lakra, Lilima Minz, Namita Toppo, Vandana Kataria, Sushila Chandu, Poonam Rani, Rajani Etimarpu, Savita & Deep Ekka are chasing an elusive dream. While these names aren’t really famous yet, a medal around their neck would propel them to instant stardom.
The girls had defied several odds to have a shot at Olympics medal. They have fought their personal battles. They have overcome hopeless hockey administrative set-up in India. They have overcome corruptions at various level. They have practiced at pitches not suitable for any kind of international level game.
Experts say that medal chances are slim given the gap between our team and other top team. But, the girls have really toiled hard since many months to sharpen the skills and effect a great upset.
If Indian women’s hockey team get a medal, and we hope they do, it would be a great spectacle.
