You feel sad looking at India’s modest medal tally at the Rio Olympics.
You think India can do much better than single digit medals.
You vented out your frustrated about Govt’s apathy towards sports in India.
You want to do something about it.
If any of the above is true for you, Congratulations. First, I think you are a true sports lover. Second, you really care for sports in India and think India can do much better. And third, you really want to make an impact in this area.
Now, I have good news for you. I want to share 3 things that you can start doing immediately and make a change. These aren’t the things that look great but difficult to do. Anyways, I will let you decide that.
1) RESPECT people who are seriously pursuing sports and helping others pursue it.
Next time you hear a kid/youngster saying that he is preparing for the upcoming school games, districts, states, nationals or internationals, tell them him/her how proud you are. A simple test to check if you are genuine – your feeling of respect in this case >= a case where kid/youngster was preparing for CAT/JEE/IAS/MBBS/CA/PhD/GRE/SAT (you get the drift right) instead.
Second, you respect the trainers and coaches who are working behind the scene to train the athlete. Run a simple Gopichand test here. Are you as respectful to the coach/trainer as you would be to our very own Pulela Gopichand?
2) MOTIVATE sportspersons around you
If you see a kid/youngster slogging hard in the field, walk over to him/her and shake hands. Pat their back and tell them to work hard & persevere. If you happen to see their parents/guardians around, walk up to them and congratulate them on making the bold choice, for breaking the stereotype and wish them well. And, if you know the game, play with the kid and pass on those secret tricks of trade.
If you have a luxury of wealth at your side, donate and fund a few of these budding stars. The quantum and nature of support is immaterial; doing itself is a matter of great importance here.
3) ENCOURAGE people to indulge in sports & fitness
Never miss an opportunity to preach a thing or two about sports & fitness. This applies to all settings – workplace, social gatherings, airport, friend’s party, home, malls, movie halls and the list goes on. You surely don’t want to advise on things you do not practice, so do that first. And, let people know how happy you are and that they can also be happy if they indulge in sports.
A simple staircase test might help. Every time you proudly take the stairs to your floor, pull atleast (coax them or force them!) one colleague/friend who is taking the elevator. I am sure you can define many such simple tests to rate yourself for all other settings.
So that’s it. You might ask if this is enough.
I do not have statistics to prove that this would be enough. But, I know for a fact that if you do this genuinely and do this all time, you would be one of those noble souls in India championing a Sports revolution in India.
On the occasion of the National Sports Day (yes, we have one such day), lets decide to do something impactful to change Sports in India forever. Lets take #PledgeForSports and do our bit towards starting a sporting revolution in India.
